2013 NFL Draft results: Browns beef up defense with Barkevious Mingo

SB Nation’s Browns blog reacts to the team’s selection of Barkevious Mingo.

Al Bello

The Cleveland Browns selected LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo with the No. 6 overall selection. He's the third pass rusher off the board after Dion Jordan and Ezekiel Ansah. The Browns have quietly built one of the better front seven units in football, and Mingo gives them another piece to work with.

SB Nation Browns blog Dawgs By Nature believes the Browns were looking to take Jordan, but were thwarted when the Dolphins traded up to grab him. Here’s what Chris Pokorny had to say about Mingo:

After months of speculation and wild rumors throughout the day, the Browns might have been thrown a major curveball when the Miami Dolphins traded up to No. 3 overall (from No. 12 overall) with the Oakland Raiders. Everyone thought for sure that offensive tackle Lane Johnson was coming off the board, but they took OLB Dion Jordan instead. When the staff at Dawgs By Nature compiled our Browns big boards, Jordan was listed as the top player on six of our seven boards.

Ultimately, the Browns had to make the decision to go with another pass rusher that defensive coordinator Ray Horton can utilize.

Mike Krupka scouted Mingo back in March. Here’s his take:

Barkevious Mingo is a tremendous talent. He has the skill set and athletic qualities to be a dominating pass rusher at the next level. His burst off the snap is elite. He has a good stock of pass rush moves to develop at the next level. Mingo does a good job of disrupting passing lanes when unable to get to QB. He shows good hand usage but will need a lot of work in this area at the next level. Questions need to be answered whether he can play at his current weight and if he has the strength to consistently get free from NFL-level tackles.
