The Washington Redskins selected N.C. State cornerback David Amerson with the No. 51 overall pick in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Amerson is rated as the No. 65 overall prospect and No. 8 cornerback in this year's draft class by SB Nation's Dan Kadar.

David Amerson was selected by the Redskins in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Amerson is coming off a disappointing junior season, but could prove to be a sleeper at cornerback down the line.

David Amerson and Earl Wolff worked out with the rest of the defensive backs at the NFL Combine on Tuesday, and the results were pretty good. Amerson ran a much faster 40 than I would have guessed, and Wolff showed good speed as well. ... Amerson's 40 time should help calm some fears about him. Amerson's stock possibly would have been higher had he been able to come out of N.C. State as a sophomore. He racked up 13 interceptions that season behind an excellent pass rush. David Sanders of the SB Nation blog Backing the Pack said that Amerson could have been a first round pick if he was draft eligible. At 6'1, 205 pounds, Amerson has an excellent frame for the position with tremendous physical bona fides as a complement.
Amerson had a disappointing 2012 along with the rest of the Wolfpack, however. When the pass rush subsided, Amerson’s lack of elite agility was much more apparent, and his draft stock fell as a result. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t still a very good prospect, but there have been rumblings that Amerson may be better suited as a center-fielding safety than a corner in the NFL.
Luckily for Amerson, he may not have to be thrust into action immediately. The Redskins still have DeAngelo Hall, E.J. Biggers and Josh Wilson on roster. All three will become free agents at the end of the 2013 season, however, making Amerson a forward-thinking selection. Amerson could also contribute at safety, where the Redskins have a bigger immediate need.

Amerson finished the 2012 season with 48 tackles, 12 passes defended and five interceptions. He was much more sticky-fingered as a sophomore, collecting 13 interceptions to five pass breakups along with 41 tackles. Amerson proved to be adept once he got the ball in his hands. He returned three interceptions for touchdowns over his final two seasons, and was used occasionally as a kick returner.
