NFL Draft results: Kiko Alonso selected by Bills with 46th pick

Kiko Alonso was selected by the Bills in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He has the size, motor and athleticism to succeed and become one of the steals of the draft.

Scott Olmos-US PRESSWIRE

With the 46th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected linebacker Kiko Alonso from the University of Oregon. Alonso is SB Nation's No. 6 rated middle linebacker in the 2013 draft class and SB Nation's Dan Kadar rates him as the No. 107 overall player in this year's draft.

Alonso could end up as either a middle linebacker or a 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL. He has good instincts, athleticism, and the size to make a long career at the next level. His senior year, Alonso totaled 81 tackles, 14 for loss, four interceptions, and four forced fumbles; playing at his best in big games. He can drop back in coverage or play forward against the run.

Prior to his junior season, Alsonso struggled with injuries and had his share of off-the-field issues. He has improved his durability and his behavior over the past two years, still a DUI and burglary charge are cause for concern. On the field his biggest weakness is a lack of lateral quickness.

The Bills needed help at middle linebacker and Alonso should be able to step in right away. Alonso is both a good run stopped and does well in pass coverage which should help the Bills’ front seven. Alonso should be able to at least rotate in heavily if he’s not a Week 1 starter.

Alonso missed the Senior Bowl and did not work out at the Scouting Combine to let his injured wrist heal, but he looks to be 100% healthy now. On top of his skills on defense, he also has proven to be an excellent special teams player. A skill that will help him find his way on the roster.
