2013 NFL Draft: Jaguars eying Johnthan Banks, not QB, per report

It appears as if Geno Smith will have to continue waiting to hear his name called if the Jaguars stay put at No. 33.

USA TODAY Sports

It's no secret the Jacksonville Jaguars want to upgrade the quarterback position, but it doesn't look like they are going to do it with the first pick in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Instead, they are leaning towards strengthening their secondary, possibly with Johnthan Banks, the cornerback out of Mississippi State.

Banks would fit the mold of new Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley, who prefers tall, long cornerbacks. At 6’2” with arms measuring nearly 34”, Banks is certainly tall and long and he has good ball skills, which gives him the chance to be a good press corner if he puts weight on. That would fit perfectly into Bradley’s scheme and give the secondary some much-needed talent.

As badly as the Jaguars need a quarterback, even if just to challenge Blaine Gabbert as much as take over the position, they don't necessarily need one at No. 33. Because E.J. Manuel was the only quarterback selected in the first round, there is a glut of quarterbacks left, one of whom Jacksonville could probably get later in the draft.

In an ideal world, the Jaguars would be able to trade down from No. 33, add an extra mid-round pick and be able to consider a quarterback or someone else later in the second round. They were trying to trade down, according to multiple reports, and might still do so, but if they do end up making the first selection on Friday it looks like they will not be picking a quarterback.
