2013 NFL Draft: 3 quarterbacks expected to go early 2nd round

Geno Smith, Matt Barkley and Ryan Nassib will be hoping to hear their names called early in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

After a quiet first round, quarterbacks are expected to fly off the board early in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Gil Brandt of the NFL Network. Brandt says to expect three signal callers to go between pick Nos. 33 and 39, with the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 35 and the New York Jets at No. 39 being likely dropping points.

Just one quarterback went in the first round, and it was arguably the biggest surprise of the evening. Florida State's E.J. Manuel fell to the Buffalo Bills at No. 16. Geno Smith, Matt Barkley and Ryan Nassib were left on the board after the first round. All three quarterbacks were considered potential top 10 picks.

The Eagles and the Jets make sense as possible destinations for a quarterback. In Philadelphia, the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart are an aging and injury-prone Michael Vick, and a slow-footed Nick Foles who may not be an ideal fit for what Chip Kelly wants to do on offense. In New York, the Jets currently have the disappointing Mark Sanchez entrenched as the starter.

Brandt didn't mention who the third team might be. He ruled out the Jacksonville Jaguars, who he says are leaning towards selecting cornerback Johnthan Banks. The Arizona Cardinals may be a strong possibility at No. 38. Dan Kadar's second round mock draft has Barkley going to Glendale.
