The Denver Broncos have signed former San Diego Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips, according to Mike Garafolo of USA Today on Saturday. Phillips is joining Denver on a one-year deal, Garafolo reported in a follow-up Tweet.
Denver Broncos sign LB Shaun Phillips to 1-year contract
The Denver Broncos have brought in outside linebacker Shaun Phillips on a one-year contract, according to reports.

It’s the first time that Phillips will be changing teams in the NFL, as he’s played all nine of his NFL seasons with the Chargers since being drafted in the fourth round in 2004. He’s played in all 16 games with the Chargers five times in his career, including last season, in which he had 50 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
Despite his age, Phillips definitely has something left in the tank. When they lost defensive end Elvis Dumervil, it became obvious that the Broncos needed another body to rush the passer, and Phillips will be able to step right into that role as a starter or as a rotational player.
There are still aging pass rushers on the market, but Phillips may have the most left in the tank. It will be interesting to see how the Broncos elect to use Phillips. It’s unclear what the compensation for his one-year contract will be at this time.
