With the later picks in the 7th round, some players are in better position by not getting selected by stronger teams without much room for competition and instead can benefit from hitting undrafted free agency where they can select the team that is a strong fit for them.
2013 NFL Draft results: Zac Dysert joins crowded QB corps in Denver
Beating out Brock Osweiler might be a tall task for Zac Dysert, who will have to prove he’s worth a roster spot on a playoff-caliber team.
After the Raiders took their first pass rusher of the draft with the No. 233 pick, the Broncos and 49ers, two playoff-level teams, selected quarterbacks that will have their work cut out for them as they try to find their way on to NFL rosters:
233. Oakland Raiders: David Bass, DE, Missouri Western
The Raiders struggled to find a pass rush for much of the 2012 season, finishing the year with just 25 sacks, the second-fewest in the NFL. Many believed that would lead the Raiders to address the line early on, especially considering the departure of Richard Seymour and Desmond Bryant; however, it was ignored in the first two days.
Bass represents the first defensive end taken by the Raiders and it wasn’t until 230 selections after when they were slated to make their first pick. At 6-4, 262 pounds, he was a four-year starter at a lower level of competition, but showed intriguing skills and was consistently strong in the East-West Shrine Game.
234. Denver Broncos: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami (OH)
The story of the Denver Broncos quarterback corps was one of the most-prevalent stories in the 2012 season, as the Broncos signed future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and drafted Brock Osweiler to be the heir-apparent in the second round.
That makes a tough competition for Dysert who was just 20 selections away from going on to the undrafted free agent market where he’d be able to choose a team he felt he’d be able to compete for a starting spot. Instead, he’ll have to show the Broncos that he is a worth a roster spot as the third quarterback and perhaps have to beat out Osweiler to have a chance at starting with the team.
235. New England Patriots: Steve Beauharnais, LB, Rutgers
The Patriots have been a playoff team in nine of the last 10 seasons, but an elite defense hasn’t been something they’ve had often. In each of the last three seasons, the Patriots finished in the bottom quarter of the league in total defense and need to continue to add defensive playmakers to build a Super Bowl-caliber team.
At 6-1, 240 pounds, Beauharnais was a productive linebacker for the Scarlet Knights, but is limited athletically. His 4.84 speed is likely the reason that he fell into the final picks of the 2013 NFL Draft, but he may be able to thrive in a Patriots defense that has found roles for inside linebackers that have had speed concerns in the past like Brandon Spikes.
236. Chicago Bears: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State
The additions of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery made a big difference for the Bears in 2012, but when Jeffery was off the field with a hand injury, there was no other option on the field for Jay Cutler besides Marshall. While Marshall accumulated 1,508 yards receiving, no other receiver on the roster topped 400 yards.
Wilson caught headlines in 2012 for all the wrong reasons as he accused head coach Mike Leach of abuse and quit the team. The burned bridges left Wilson without a place to have a pro day and the school found no evidence to corroborate Wilson's claims. Regardless, he's a talented receiver at 6-3, 194 pounds with 4.45 speed that could prove his skills in a new setting.
237. San Francisco 49ers: B.J. Daniels, QB, South Florida
With all eyes on Matt Scott and Tyler Bray as they approach undrafted free agency, a quarterback went off the board late in the 7th round, but it was B.J. Daniels. At 5-11, 222 pounds he's smaller than is expected from an NFL quarterback, but Russell Wilson proved in 2012 that it isn't necessarily a death sentence.
Unlike Wilson, though, Daniels wasn’t a productive collegiate quarterback as he completed just 56.7 percent of his passes in his senior season with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
