2013 NFL Draft results: Falcons take safeties back-to-back

Notre Dame’s Zeke Motta finally went off the board at No. 244.

The 2013 NFL Draft is almost over as we approach the tail end of the 7th round. The Falcons doubled up on safeties with promising upside, while the Lions went with a linebacker and the 49ers added another offensive tackle.

Let’s recap picks 243-247:

243, Atlanta Falcons: Kemal Ishmael, S, UCF

Ishmael is an aggressive tackling force who loves to hit. He has been a starter since his freshman year at UCF and is their all-time leader among defensive backs in tackles. Ishmael is an all-out effort player and was the defensive leader of the Knights. He needs to improve his coverage skills to make it in the NFL.

244, Atlanta Falcons: Zeke Motta, S, Notre Dame

Motta has great NFL size and solid athleticism. He has a quick backpedal and reads underneath routes well, closing quickly on the receiver. He also is strong against the run and has shown an ability to get into the backfield on running plays, but often tackles too high. In coverage, Motta isn’t great with his back to the quarterback and lacks hip fluidity and closing speed. He is used to playing in deep zone coverage and hasn’t proven himself as a man-to-man defender.

245, Detroit Lions: Brandon Hepburn, ILB, Florida A&M

The 6’3, 240 pound linebacker ran a 4.68 at the Combine. He had 86 tackles, 5.5 sacks and seven passes defended in 2012.

246, San Francisco 49ers: Carter Bykowski, OT, Iowa State

Carter stands tall at 6’7, 306 pounds. He ran a 5.37 and had 30 bench press reps at Iowa State’s pro day. The former tight end converted to left tackle during his time with the Cyclones.

247, Baltimore Ravens: Marc Anthony, CB, California

Anthony has the height and length of a starting cornerback, checking in at 5’11” with 32 1/8-inch arms, but his play at Cal was never dominant. He has long legs, which makes it tougher for him to transition and he’s not especially strong, although he does have the frame to put on more weight.
