Tony Jefferson signs with Cardinals as undrafted free agent

The Arizona Cardinals are addressing a big need at safety by bringing in undrafted free agent Tony Jefferson.

Joe Robbins

Former Oklahoma safety Tony Jefferson has signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent, according to the player on Twitter. Jefferson wrote in the tweet that he's going to "do it for the non-believers," meaning that he wants to show all of the teams that passed up on him that they made a mistake.

Jefferson was projected by most to go anywhere from the late third to the early fifth round, so his going undrafted was a surprise. This year saw an uncharacteristically strong safety class, in which 21 players at the position were drafted, so it’s easy to see how Jefferson was lost in the shuffle.

That said, Jefferson has been viewed as a player with starting potential from the get-go. And it’s no surprise that the Cardinals targeted him, likely for that reason. The Cardinals lost both of their starting safeties this offseason, so both safety spots are wide open.

It’s not often an undrafted free agent will be able to come in and immediately compete for a starting job, but Jefferson should do just that with the Cardinals. One potential issue is his hamstring, which plagued him through the NFL Combine and OU’s Pro Day.
