2013 undrafted free agent signings: Rams add Philip Lutzenkirchen

Tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen is the most notable name in the St. Louis Rams’ undrafted free agent haul after the team picked up several pieces in the post-draft UDFA scramble.

Several players made the St. Louis Rams’ roster from the undrafted free agent process last season, and the team will hope to repeat those successes by adding nine players after the 2013 NFL Draft wrapped up.

Turf Show Times summarized how last year’s crop of UDFAs yielded punter Johnny Hekker, backup quarterback Austin Davis and safety Matt Daniels, all of whom had slipped through all seven rounds of the draft. There are no punters and quarterbacks in this year’s crop, but the team did add a safety in Texas Tech’s Cody Davis and one of college football’s best kickers in Louisiana Lafayette’s Brett Baer, although he’ll have trouble beating out 2012 draft pick Greg Zuerlein.

Perhaps the most intriguing player the Rams picked up is Auburn’s Phillip Lutzenkirchen, a 6’5 target with a knack for getting open in the red zone. He had five touchdown grabs on Auburn’s national championship team in 2010 and seven in 2011, although an injury ended his senior year. He’ll have an uphill battle to make the roster, with new signing Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks already on the team as tight ends. But with a productive college resume, he could have a shot.

Here’s a full breakdown:

Brett Baer, K, Lousiana Lafayette

Braden Brown, OT, BYU

Benny Cunningham, RB, Middle Tennessee State

Cody Davis, S, Texas Tech

Michael Gillard, MLB, Georgia

Philip Lutzenkirchen, TE, Auburn

Graham Pocic, OL, Illinois

Gerald Rivers, DE, Ole Miss

Philip Steward, LB, Houston
