Patriots unlikely to re-sign Deion Branch

With the drafting of two receivers relatively early, it seems unlikely that the New England Patriots will re-sign veteran Deion Branch.

Jared Wickerham

Deion Branch has been a productive receiver for the New England Patriots in the past, but his time with the organization (and perhaps with the NFL in general) seems to be nearing its end. As noted by ESPN Boston, it seems unlikely that the Patriots will re-sign the veteran receiver at this point.

That's because the Patriots invested two picks on the wide receiver position with Aaron Dobson in the second round and Josh Boyce in the fourth round. Both receivers are regarded as potential impact players down the line, with the former seemingly well-equipped to do some damage in his rookie season.

Branch, 33, has played 11 seasons in the NFL, seven of which were with the Patriots, who drafted him in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. In his best season, Branch hauled in five touchdowns and accrued 998 yards off of 78 receptions in 16 games with the Patriots in 2005.

Last season, Branch had arguably his least productive season with 145 yards and no touchdowns off of 16 receptions in 10 games played.

Branch likely won’t be back with the Patriots, and as to whether or not he finds another team to stick with this season, the chances seem slim. It might be time for the once-productive receiver to call it a career,
