49ers bring Nate Montana to minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers are bringing Nate Montana, Joe Montana’s son, to their rookie minicamp in May.

Jonathan Daniel

The San Francisco 49ers are bringing in undrafted free agent quarterback Nate Montana, the son of 49ers great Joe Montana, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. Montana is coming in with an invitation to participate in San Francisco's three-day rookie minicamp, which begins on May 10.

Joe Montana is considered one of, if not the best quarterback to ever play the game. Nate joining the 49ers just seems right at the end of the day, though he enters with considerably less expectations and fanfare. He was a backup for three years at three different schools: Pasadena City College, Notre Dame and the University of Montana (hah).

He got his first real playing time at West Virginia Wesleyan, a Division II school. There, he threw for 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions in nine games, but only completed 51.6 percent of his passes. That could be due to the fact that he was called on to throw the ball a lot though, with multiple games of 50 or more passes.

Montana joins a crowded quarterback roster, though one that is essentially open for a backup or third-stringer. Colin Kaepernick is the starter and Scott Tolzien was on the roster as the No. 3 last year, though he'll have to compete for the backup job. There's also MarQueis Gray, who joined the team as an UDFA on Saturday, and B.J Daniels, who was drafted in the seventh round.

Naturally, Montana has a long way to go to earn a contract after the rookie minicamp, and a long way to go after that to make the roster, but stranger things have happened in the NFL.
