NFL news roundup: Jets to keep Sanchez, E.J. Manuel may start in 2013, and more

Here’s what stories happened on Sunday while you were sleeping off the draft hangover.

USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 NFL Draft is over, most of the free agents have signed, and we have now entered the darkest part of the offseason. There’s going to be scant news between now and the start of training camp, unless you’re really into OTAs or something.

Anyway, here’s some of the bigger headlines from a lazy Sunday:

Jets to keep Mark Sanchez into preseason

The Jets seem committed to dragging out the Mark Sanchez drama as long as possible. Rex Ryan insists that he will take the first snaps in OTAs, and now the latest reports suggest that the team will keep him into the preseason, possibly to compete for the starting job. With Geno Smith in town, Sanchez doesn't have a future with the team anymore, but cutting him would cost a whopping $17 million cap hit. John Idzik has to decide whether to keep the unpopular Sanchez and risk fan outrage or simply eat the money.

49ers bring Nate Montana to minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers have invited undrafted free agent Nate Montana to rookie minicamp. Yes, that is the son of 49er legend Joe Montana. No pressure, kid. Nate bounced around the college ranks as a backup, going from Pasadena City College to Notre Dame to the University of Montana. If he impresses at the minicamp, the 49ers could sign him to a training camp contract.

Eddie Lacy injury scared Steelers

Alabama's Eddie Lacy was a popular mock draft option for the Pittsburgh Steelers due to their need of a running back. The Steelers didn't agree, as they took Lacy off their draft board entirely due to his lingering foot injury. Pittsburgh instead went with Michigan State's Le'Veon Bell in the second round. Lacy eventually went to the Green Bay Packers with the 61st pick.

E.J. Manuel to compete for Buffalo Bills starting job

E.J. Manuel has a lot of upside, but he's also one of the rawest QB prospects taken in this year's draft. That's not stopping the Bills from saying that he's in open competition for the starting job in 2013. They signed Kevin Kolb over the offseason as the presumptive starter, and he should take the reins for now unless Manuel blows everyone away in training camp and preseason.

Duran Carter signing with Minnesota Vikings

The son of Hall of Famer Cris Carter signed with his father's team. Shouldn't be an awkward situation at all. Duron Carter never really found a home in college, transferring from Ohio State to Alabama and later to Florida Atlantic. He has a grand total of 13 catches in his college career. Carter has the talent, but concerns over his attitude have led many teams to shy away. The Vikings will at least give him a shot in training camp.
