Branden Albert trade: Chiefs now looking for a 2014 NFL Draft pick

The Chiefs are still trying to shop Branden Albert, and now that the 2013 NFL Draft is over they have plenty of time to get the deal they want.

The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t given up on trading Brandon Albert. According to Yahoo!‘s Jason Cole, Kansas City will keep Albert on the trading block, this time likely in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs all but consummated a trade sending Branden Albert to the Miami Dolphins in the days leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft. The Dolphins agreed to give Albert the contract he was asking for, but the Chiefs didn't get the draft pick they wanted from Miami.

The Chiefs drafted Eric Fisher with the No. 1 overall pick on Thursday. According to Cole, the Dolphins are still hoping they can work out a deal, given that the Chiefs now have a relative surplus of starting-caliber left tackles. They know that Albert isn't long for Kansas City, and that eventually the Chiefs will need to settle.

That said, the Chiefs now have more time to work out a deal in their favor. For example, they may open up negotiations with several teams that didn't address offensive tackle in the draft. The Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers all have holes at left tackle, and should be willing to hear out the Chiefs' pitch.

The Dolphins selected Tennessee’s Dallas Thomas in the third round over the weekend. Thomas has the potential to play tackle or guard and may be able to contribute as a rookie. That said, he isn’t the proven commodity that Albert is. Expect the Dolphins to listen very carefully to what the Chiefs have to say in the coming days or weeks.
