Giants’ Eli Manning ‘looking forward to working’ with Ryan Nassib

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning isn’t threatened by the drafting of rookie quarterback Ryan Nassib, and is looking forward to working with the former Syracuse signal caller.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is "looking forward to working with" new rookie quarterback Ryan Nassb, according to Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger. Nassib was taken with the No. 13 pick in the fourth round, and was the fifth quarterback off the board, behind Geno Smith, E.J. Manuel, Mike Glennon and Matt Barkley.

Manning said that he expected the Giants to bring in a younger guy to learn and develop behind him, saying that it’s “always good to have a good quarterback to come in and learn and be prepared. You never know what happens in this league, and you always have to have quality players on your team and quarterbacks, and so I think it’s a good thing.”

While many of the rookie quarterbacks may be hoping to do some damage in their rookie year, the chances of Nassib earning playing time likely hitches solely on Manning getting injured, as he is New York’s franchise quarterback who hopes to have a good deal of playing time left in him.

Manning thinks he’s in the prime of his career, and it’s hard to argue with that. He had something of a down year in 2012, his ninth season in the NFL, but he still performed well with 3,948 yards off of 321 completions, good for 26 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. His completion percentage at 59.9 percent was lacking, but that’s all.

Nassib will be coming in to learn and develop, to be a safety net and possibly to be traded down the line. Initially, he'll have to compete with 12-year veteran David Carr for the primary backup role.
