NFL Draft 2013: Ryan Nassib ‘wounded’ by Bills’ pick of E.J. Manuel

New York Giants quarterback Ryan Nassib was “wounded” when the Buffalo Bills passed him up for E.J. Manuel.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Nassib was "wounded," by the Buffalo Bills' decision to pass him up in favor of E.J. Manuel in the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Peter King of SI.com. In his Monday Morning Quarterback post, King said that he's heard Nassib wasn't telling the full story when he said he was "a little disappointed" in the way things went with the draft.

In college, Nassib was the quarterback under new Bills head coach Doug Marrone and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Their ascension to the NFL level from Syracuse has a lot to do with Nassib and his level of play in 2012, and most figured they would kick off the new regime by bringing in Nassib.

But that’s just how it works sometimes in the NFL. The Bills have a particular group of players, and they went through a long evaluation process in which they came to the conclusion that Manuel is the right guy for them. They had him pegged as the best quarterback and liked his fit with their personnel, nothing more and nothing less.

Still, Nassib being "wounded," by the pick is understandable. It's not that going to the New York Giants is a bad thing; it's just not as good an opportunity as possibly competing for the Buffalo starting job. Instead, Nassib will play behind Eli Manning, who will be a starter probably until the day he retires, so his only shot of playing this year is in garbage time or if Manning goes down with an injury, something that hasn't happened in quite a long time.
