Tony Romo will influence Cowboys’ offensive planning in 2013

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo will have a bigger say in what the Cowboys do on offense.

USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will have greater influence over his team’s offensive game plans and personnel, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder. Romo will meet with coaches on Mondays and Tuesdays to discuss the week’s offensive plans.

Romo has received his fair share of criticism over the years, and if Dallas’s offense struggles in 2013, this move could certainly bring about more negative energy. However, if the Cowboys offense performs well and helps the team have a successful season, fans and pundits will likely ease up on the 33-year-old.

In 2012, Romo passed for a career-best 4,903 yards, but he also tied a career high with 19 interceptions. The Cowboys missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season and fourth time in five years.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones addressed Romo’s new responsibilities in an interview with ESPN Dallas’s Tim MacMahon, and he compared his QB’s job to another prominent NFL signal caller:

”Tony is going to have more time, more presence. Not only is having in the offseason but when the season starts, beginning Mondays, assuming we played Sundays, he’s going to have more time on the job.

“A part of what we agreed with was extra time on the job, beyond the norm. That doesn’t mean that he didn’t have a lot of time on the job, but extra time on the job, Peyton Manning-type time on the job.”

So now, Jones is likening Romo to Manning. Any hope the Dallas quarterback had for reduced pressure has been dashed.
