Chris Clemons injury update: Seahawks DE uncertain for season opener

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons is recovering from a torn ACL and may not be ready for the beginning of the season.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks made some big strides to improve their already elite defense this offseason, including free agent signings of Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett on top of taking Jesse Williams in the 2013 NFL Draft. Some might have considered all of these moves a luxury, but there's at least one red flag heading into the season that makes these additions a definite positive: the health of Chris Clemons.

As noted by John Boyle of HeraldNet.com, Clemons is dealing with an injury and he may not be ready for the start of the regular season. Clemons suffered a torn ACL and damaged meniscus in a playoff win against the Washington Redskins last season.

Clemons making it back in time seems unlikely given how long these things generally take, but he should be able to make it back within the first few weeks of the season. It’s unclear at this time if he’ll begin the season on the physically unable to perform list if he’s unable to go in Week 1.

Fortunately, guys like Avril and Bennett should see a lot of playing time in his absence. In the end, the Seahawks want to see a pass-rushing line featuring all of Clemons, Avril, and Bennett as well as Bruce Irvin, but the line should still be a strong point with Clemons on the mend.
