NFL Draft 2013: Packers ensure competition along offensive line

Green Bay added some offensive linemen in the 2013 draft, and the coaching staff is hoping that it will increase the level of competition on the roster.

The Green Bay Packers took a pair of offensive lineman in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but that doesn't mean they want to immediately replace any starters, says Gary D'Amato of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The additions of tackles David Bakhtiari of Colorado and J.C. Tretter of Cornell does mean that there will be more competition in training camp this year, though.

"If I'm in that (offensive line) room, let's be honest, you've got two fourth-round picks back-to-back," said offensive line coach James Campen. "Certainly, the competition barometer went up a heck of a lot. So that's a good thing to have."

Campen also said that he thinks both Bakhtiari and Tretter could play at multiple positions, so it’s possible they make a push for playing time on the interior of the offensive line as well.

Marshall Newhouse and Bryan Bulaga were the starting left and right tackles for the Packers last year, but the Packers allowed 51 sacks in 2012, the second-highest total in the NFL, so clearly there is room for improvement. Green Bay was still in the top 10 in the NFL in terms of passing offense, though, so even a little improvement in pass protection could make their already high powered offense even better.
