The New England Patriots released five players on Monday, including defensive back Malcolm Williams, according to a news release from the team. In addition to Williams, the Patriots also cut wide receiver Jeremy Ebert, fullback Tony Fiammetta, tight end Brad Herman and defensive linemen Tracy Robertson.

Williams, a seventh-round selection in the 2011 draft, played in four regular season and three playoff games during two seasons with New England. He ended the season on the 53-man roster, but became expendable after the Patriots drafted two defensive backs in the third round of the NFL Draft.

Ebert was also a former seventh-round draft pick. He spent training camp with the Patriots last season before being released in the final cuts. He spent time on Philadelphia’s practice squad before joining New England’s practice squad later in the season. Robertson bounced around the league, including a stint on the Patriots’ practice squad last season.

Both Fiammetta and Herman spent the entire 2012 season on the roster, although in an inactive capacity. Fiammetta signed with New England last offseason, after three NFL seasons in Dallas and Carolina, but spent the season on the reserve/left squad list. He reportedly left the team due to a family issue, but was reinstated in March. Herman suffered an Achillies’ injury during offseason workouts last season and spent the year on injured reserve.
