Dolphins unhappy Davone Bess missed 3 games with back injury

Davone Bess was traded to the Browns during the 2013 NFL Draft, and reports suggest there was friction between the wide receiver and a new Dolphins coaching staff last season.

The Miami Dolphins pulled off one of the bigger surprises of the 2013 NFL Draft, sending Davone Bess to the Cleveland Browns while swapping mid-round draft picks. Speaking with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Bess suggested described the parting with Miami as "bittersweet," and suggested that the organization was upset that he sat out the final three games of the regular season with a back injury.

“To be honest, I have no idea,” Bess said. “I kind of left that in last season. It was a touchy situation, but we let bygones be bygones. We squashed it, you know? We moved forward and that’s the end of that.”

Bess did not say that the tiff was the reason he was traded. The free agent signings of Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson may have made Bess' departure inevitable. The Palm Beach Post suggested that friction between Bess and a new coaching staff may have played a role, however. Bess was not placed on injured reserve late in the regular season because the Dolphins believed he could play through the pain.

Bess is moving on. He made it clear that he is looking forward to playing with the Browns next season. He should be a good No. 3 or 4 receiver in a young, but potentially excellent receiving corps. Bess can act as a veteran mentor to the like of Josh Gordon, Greg Little and Travis Benjamin, while also giving the offense a pair of steady hands in the slot.

“To come in and just share my knowledge and be able to help out a group not only from a physical, playmaking standpoint, but just more mental and just understanding the game of football from an X’s and O’s standpoint,” Bess said. “From what I heard, the guys are great, and I’m looking forward to meeting them all and jelling this team together.”
