Buccaneers rumors: Eric Wright meets with Greg Schiano, could re-sign with Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay is trying to re-negotiate Wright’s deal to keep him in pewter.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to re-work the contract of cornerback Eric Wright after signing him last offseason to a five-year deal worth $37 million, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Wright has been a complete bust in Tampa Bay thus far, failing a drug test last year to earn him a four-game suspension on top of playing just awful football. Wright had come over from the Detroit Lions via free agency and was expected to be the top corner but never lived up to expectations.

The Buccaneers would probably love to cut Wright, but since the corner market is so thin, their best option is to keep him at a lower price and continue to look elsewhere. They could still be looking at Darrelle Revis.

The secondary has promise in Tampa Bay with safeties Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron fortifying the back end, but the corners are a nightmare. Wright is mediocre regardless of how much he is or isn't being paid, and with E.J. Biggers leaving for the Washington Redskins, the other starting spot is up for grabs.

Head coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominic are likely to address that problem in the first round of the draft should no trade for Revis happen, taking either Dee Milliner of the Alabama Crimson Tide or Xavier Rhodes of the Florida State Seminoles.
