The New Orleans Saints could keep safety Roman Harper in 2013, primarily due to the fact that they’ve already paid him half his salary for the season.

With a total salary of $5.25 million this season, Harper has already been paid close to half. It wouldn’t make sense for the Saints to release him after that kind of financial commitment, so him remaining with the team through 2013 seems likely.
That said, the Saints did draft Kenny Vaccaro in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Vaccaro was the top safety in the draft (and was the first one off the board), and just about every expert out there considered him NFL-ready. Vaccaro should compete and win the starting job, which would put Harper in a backup role.
It’s possible that the Saints paid the $2.6 million as a precaution in the event that they didn’t land the safety they were after in the draft, of course, which could mean that they are still alright with releasing Harper and saving approximately $2.6 million against the cap.
