Vikings stadium plans will be unveiled May 13

Fans in Minnesota will soon have a chance to see plans for the Vikings’ new home.

Tom Dahlin

The Minnesota Vikings are set to unveil plans for their new stadium, according to John Vomhof Jr. of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. The unveiling will take place May 13 at the Guthrie Theater in downtown Minneapolis.

This season will be Minnesota’s last playing at the Metrodome. The Vikings will play at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium, opened in 2009, in 2014 and ‘15, and if everything goes according to plan, the team will move into its new home for the 2016 season. The stadium is expected to cost $975 million and will seat 65,000 fans.

While details of the venue haven’t been released, some potential features were described in a an Environmental Impact Statement, per Richard Meryhew and Janet Moore of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The new stadium will be larger than the Metrodome, and it could have a retractable roof and windows -- although, those details haven’t been set in stone yet. The stadium’s design was described as “a bold, iconic, geometric structure with long sloping, angular facets that are primarily directed toward the downtown Minneapolis skyline” in the statement.

While the Vikings have been hoping to build a new stadium for years, it wasn’t until last May that the Minnesota Legislature approved funding. The franchise is covering $477 million of the cost, the state will contribute $348 million and $150 million will be provided by Minnesota’s hospitality tax.
