NFL Draft 2013: Geno Smith fires agents

Geno Smith felt he should have been drafted in the first round, if not No. 1 overall, and is looking for new representation as a result.

Geno Smith is moving on from his agents at Select Sports, according to Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal. Smith will be agent-less for at least five days, with contract negotiations for rookies getting underway following the end of the 2013 NFL Draft on Saturday.

Smith was considered by many to be the top quarterback prospect in his draft class, and was projected to go in the first round of the draft Thursday. He slipped to the second round, however, ultimately being taken No. 39 overall by the New York Jets. Florida State's E.J. Manuel was the first and only quarterback taken in the first round, going No. 16 overall to the Buffalo Bills.

Mullen did not report a particular reason for Smith’s decision to look for new representation. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, however, Smith fired his agents as a direct result of his drop in the draft. How much blame should be assigned to his agents is up for debate.

There’s no word yet where Smith will look for representation next, though Mehta reports that it won’t be with Jay-Z.
