Brandon Meriweather injury: Redskins’ safety on track for training camp

Washington safety Brandon Meriweather is coming back from a torn ACL.

Rob Grabowski-US PRESSWIRE

Washington Redskins strong safety Brandon Meriweather is recovering well from surgery on the torn ACL in his right knee, and he should be back in time for the start of training camp in the fall, according to the Washington Post's Mike Jones.

Meriweather is entering the second year of a four-year contract he signed with the Redskins before the 2012 season. Last year, he played in just one game, as a sprained right knee sidelined him through the first 10 weeks of the season. He tore the ACL in the second quarter of Washington's Week 11 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the year with seven tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception and one pass breakup.

Considering those numbers all came in a little under a half of football, the Redskins certainly missed Meriweather in their secondary. When they signed him, they were hoping to get the player who compiled 293 tackles, 31 pass breakups, 12 interceptions and 10 tackles for loss over the previous five seasons with the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears.

The Redskins ranked 30th in pass defense last season, giving up 281.9 yards per game through the air. Washington’s 31 passing touchdowns allowed was tied for second-most in the NFL.
