Herman Edwards thinks Chiefs are off to a good start under Andy Reid

With the trade for Alex Smith and their recent performance in the 2013 NFL Draft, Herman Edwards believes good things could be coming to the Kansas City Chiefs.

USA TODAY Sports

Herman Edwards believes the Kansas City Chiefs are headed in the right direction with their additions thus far in the Andy Reid era. While speaking at a conference call to promote the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe on July 19-21 to be aired on NBC and the NBC Sports Network, Edwards mentioned that the Chiefs are off to a good start under Reid. Edwards likes the pieces the Chiefs have added through the draft and free agency and believes Kansas City will be a good fit for Alex Smith.

Edwards said that Smith will fit in well with the Chiefs, because Kansas City already has an "outstanding running game" in place and that Smith takes good care of the ball, limiting turnovers. Last season Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn combined to throw 20 interceptions for the Chiefs and fumble the ball nine times. Over his last 25 starts, Smith has thrown only 10 interceptions with 10 fumbles.

The Chiefs traded their 2013 second-round pick and 2014 third-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for Smith, who will serve as an immediate upgrade at quarterback. With the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Kansas City added tackle Eric Fisher, who will either start at right tackle or slide over to left tackle should the Chiefs trade Branden Albert. Either way he should go a long way to protecting their new quarterback and only help improve Kansas City's strong running game.
