NFL news roundup: Geno Smith fires his agent, Justin Blackmon suspended and more

Geno Smith didn’t take long to make headlines in New York, although probably not for the reasons he’d like.

The marquee events of the NFL offseason may be over, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still NFL news. NFL draft picks are already making headlines while a few veterans still search for teams. With rosters taking shape around the league, some have already started looking ahead to Super Bowl XLVIII. All of that and more, in the NFL news roundup.

Geno Smith went from a No. 1 pick candidate to being selected near the top of the second round and apparently he's blaming his representation for the slide. Smith fired his agents from Select Sports on Tuesday, less than five days after he taken by the Jets in the second round. Smith opted out of the Senior Bowl and according to Tony Pauline, seemed unprepared for interviews with teams. While his performance on the field played a major role in where he was drafted, some decisions leading up to the draft, including ones heavily influenced by his agents, also had an impact. Gang Green Nation has more on Smith and the Jets.

Smith wasn't the only young player making headlines on Tuesday as Jaguars second-year wide receiver Justin Blackmon was suspended four games for violating the NFL's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Blackmon will now miss the first four games of the season and could have the guaranteed portion of his contract voided. Big Cat County has complete coverage of Blackmon's suspension and what it means for the wide receiver and the Jaguars.

Blackmon's suspension won't help matters in Jacksonville, and the Jaguars were already tied for the worst Super Bowl XLVII odds following the NFL draft. The San Francisco 49ers are the current favorites at 6/1 odds with the Denver Broncos just behind at 7/1. The New England Patriots at 8/1, Seattle Seahawks at 9/1 and Green Bay Packers at 12/1 round out the top five. The complete list of Super Bowl odds, as well as a few interesting prop bets, can be found here.

NFL free agency has slowed to a crawl, but a few veterans are still looking for a new team. Dwight Freeney is among the most notable names available and he is reportedly seeking a deal similar to the two-year $8.5 million contract that Osi Umenyiora signed with Atlanta. Freeney drew interest from Denver earlier this offseason, but may have to wait until closer to training camp to find a new team.

Tyson Clabo is also still on the market, after being released by the Atlanta Falcons. Clabo is scheduled to visit Miami as the Dolphins continue to search for an offensive tackle. Miami has also visited with Bryant McKinnie and Eric Winston this offseason. The Dolphins still have a hole at left tackle following the free agent departure of Jake Long. Clabo played right tackle the majority of his NFL career, but would at least give Miami another option. Kevin Nogle of The Phinsider has more on Clabo and his potential fit in Miami.

Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop could also be changing teams soon, although if he is traded the Packers will likely have to lower their asking price. Green Bay has reportedly been shopping Bishop on the trade market this offseason, but are yet to have serious discussions because of the high asking price. Bishop missed the entire 2012 season due to a hamstring injury.
