Rob Gronkowski injury: Agent says reports are ‘way off’ about Patriots tight end

Rob Gronkowski is dealing with another infection in his left forearm. It’s unclear if he will undergo a fourth surgery, though.

Rob Gronkowski is dealing with an infection on his left forearm after surgery was needed to repair it back in February. Reports broke Sunday morning saying the Patriots tight end may need another surgery, which would jeopardize his chances of playing at the start of the 2013 season. However, Drew Rosenhaus, Gronkowski’s agent, says that speculation is “way off,” according to Ben Volin of The Palm Beach Post.

No determinations have been made regarding Gronkowski’s situation at this point. The plate he currently has in his forearm needs to be replaced, but if the tissue around it is infected, another procedure will be required after the infection clears. Initials reports claimed a fourth surgery would sideline him for at least 10 weeks, resulting in his absence for the season opener.

Gronkowski re-broke his forearm during the divisional round of the playoffs against Houston. An infection set in after his second surgery, but it was caught early. New England will be fortunate if the new complication was discovered early enough. The Boston Globe reported the cause of the ongoing infection is unknown.

Team doctors and outside consultants are expected to meet with Gronkowski soon to decide on a course of action. The hope is to avoid surgery again and continue rehabbing.
