Kevin Kolb is ‘strong candidate’ for Bills’ starting quarterback

Now officially a Buffalo Bill, Kevin Kolb is expected to be the top competition for No. 1 position on the quarterback depth chart in 2013. Is anyone going to challenge him?

The Buffalo Bills officially announced the signing of Kevin Kolb Monday morning after the 28-year-old passer was linked to the team a week ago. General manager Buddy Nix sees Kolb as a "strong candidate" to start at quarterback for his team in 2013.

Right now, Kolb doesn't have much competition to face in his pursuit of that role. Tarvaris Jackson signed with Buffalo in February, along with 24-year-old Aaron Corp. Those two quarterbacks aren't exactly the ideal prospects to create a tough battle for the newly acquired Kolb.

Drafting a quarterback is still an option for the Bills. They hold the No. 8 overall pick, but using it to select a passer may not be a pressing issue with Kolb on the roster. Still, Kolb isn’t exactly the face of the franchise in Buffalo. In 34 games he’s thrown 28 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. Injuries, along with a terrible offensive line, plagued his tenure in Arizona.

Assuming the Bills add one more quarterback in the draft, Kolb will compete with Jackson and the rookie to start the season. For $6.5 million a year, Buffalo better find use for him. Nix might want to make sure he isn’t being recorded on the phone while talking about Kolb’s potential, though.
