NFL news roundup: Justin Blackmon releases statement, Tim Tebow clears waivers and more

There’s plenty going on in the NFL with the draft having just wrapped up, including the Justin Blackmon suspension and Tim Tebow’s release.

USA TODAY Sports

The NFL is rolling right along post-draft. Teams are gearing up for another round of free agent signings now that they know their take from the draft, and there’s plenty of movement to report on.

Some of the biggest news revolves around Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon, who was suspended four games for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. There's other free agency news and post-draft stuff as well, but we'll lead-off with pertinent Blackmon news.

Blackmon, Jags release statements

On Tuesday, both Justin Blackmon and general manager Dave Caldwell released statements regarding the suspension. The short version is that Blackmon was extremely apologetic and Caldwell was supporting of his second-year wide receiver, saying that the team will do its best to educate young players on what is right and wrong going forward.

Pats release Waters

After spending a year away from the team on the reserve/did not report list, the New England Patriots made the release of offensive lineman Brian Waters official on Tuesday. Waters wanted to play elsewhere in 2012, but the Patriots placed him on that list when he did not report instead. It's unlikely that Waters really signs elsewhere at this point, but it wouldn't be entirely unheard of. That said, he doesn't have a whole lot left to prove in the NFL.

Tebow clears waivers

Quarterback Tim Tebow wasn't claimed by any teams on waivers after being released by the New York Jets. How shocking! It sounds like some teams were interested in him, but he refused to change positions, so he really only has himself to blame at this point. Despite the over-saturation, it will definitely be interesting to see where he ends up in 2013.

Buffalo liked Rogers’ ability

The Buffalo Bills brought in Da'Rick Rogers as an undrafted free agent, and many view it as a great move. Rogers has incredible talent and could be a steal if his off-the-field issues are settled. On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Bills had a "first-to-second round" grade on Rogers for his football ability, but that his failed drug tests made him a no-go in the draft.

No reason for Floyd’s slide

Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd was consistently mocked to go in the first few picks of the 2013 NFL Draft, but he fell all the way to to No. 23, where the Minnesota Vikings took him. It was a shocking twist, and many figured there might be some unknown explanation, such as an off-the-field issue or lingering injury. However, it was reported on Tuesday that many scouts were surprised Floyd fell that far, and that there aren't any other factors at play here.
