NFL Draft 2013: Jamar Taylor’s stock affected by kidney issues

The Dolphins hope to find solid draft value in Taylor at No. 54 after the cornerback slid due to health concerns.

The Miami Dolphins took ex-Boise State Broncos cornerback Jamar Taylor in the second round with the 54th pick of the NFL Draft, believing they have a starter on their hands.

Taylor has first round talent in the opinion of most draft experts, but fell in the draft because many teams were worried about his kidney function, which was at 42 percent during the combine, according to the Miami Herald.

The corner had reportedly been taking blood pressure medication since high school, and just recently found out that it was damaging his kidneys. Now off the medication and on a different medicine for his blood pressure, Taylor and his doctors expect his kidneys to improve significantly.

Taylor is expected to come in and compete right away for a starting position alongside free agent acquisition Brett Grimes, who missed all but one game last year with a torn Achilles tendon. He would be filling the spot vacated by Sean Smith, who left in free agency to join the Kansas City Chiefs.
