Chiefs trade Javier Arenas to Cardinals for Richard Sherman

Without any apparent need for a fullback in his offense, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians has traded away his presume starter at the position. What’s the future for Kansas City at fullback?

US PRESSWIRE

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians has recently said that he is not a person that typically uses a fullback in his offense, and he apparently really means that, since Arizona traded Anthony Sherman to the Chiefs on Wednesday. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Andy Reid, who has now acquired Sherman after Kansas City drafted fullback Braden Wilson out of Kansas State in the sixth round of last weekend's draft.

It is still unclear as to what the Chiefs sent to Arizona to complete the trade.

What is clear is that Kansas City now has Sherman to compete with Wilson for a starting job at fullback. Sherman was a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals in 2011 out of Central Connecticut State, and has started 11 games over the past two seasons, but has carried the ball just one time in his career. Without any job for a fullback in Arians’ offense, it seemed apparent that Sherman would be on his way out.

Meanwhile, Reid has a myriad of options at the position. In addition to Sherman and Wilson, the Chiefs currently also have Patrick DiMarco, Ryan D'Imperio, and Nate Eachus currently on the roster and listed as fullback. Though Sherman's experience could give him an edge, it should be an uphill battle for all.
