Christian Ponder injury: Vikings QB has MRI on elbow

Is Ponder going to be healthy for his third season in the league, and will he do enough to keep his job after a rocky two-year start?

Jonathan Daniel

Christian Ponder came out of Florida State with an injury history, but he only missed one game last season. It just so happens that the game was in the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers, and coupling that with the fact that Ponder underwent an MRI on his right elbow could lead some Vikings fans to worry about his ability to stay healthy in the future.

Though, some others are less concerned with an injured Ponder, considering his mixed reviews after 26 NFL starts.

Ponder told reporters that he had to go to the ER several weeks after the season ended after his injured triceps suddenly swelled up and gave the quarterback a scare that he might have a blood clot or other severe medical injury. Before they rushed him into surgery, Ponder consulted with Vikings head trainer Eric Sugarman, who insisted first on an MRI. That test revealed that surgery would not be necessary, and Ponder recovered with ice and rest.

But will this be the beginning of Ponder developing into the franchise quarterback that the Vikings have hoped he would become, or the first in an ongoing series of medical issues? Last season, Ponder completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 2,935 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in leading Minnesota to a 10-6 record. However, that's likely the bare minimum that Ponder could maintain for long before fans get too restless and start calling for someone else to start at quarterback -- in the same way they did last year for Joe Webb.

And if Ponder’s injury history has done anything, it has proven that Webb isn’t much of an NFL starter.
