NFL rumors: Browns not interested in Brian Hoyer

Brandon Weeden’s competition likely won’t include Tom Brady’s former backup. How will the Browns and Hoyer move forward from here?

USA TODAY Sports

Brian Hoyer isn't a stranger to coming into ugly quarterback situations. Last season, the veteran 27-year-old quarterback made his first-career start when he stepped in for the Arizona Cardinals in their season finale only shortly after he had even signed with the team. That makes a point about how bad the Cardinals QB situation was last year but the fact that the Cleveland Browns are reportedly not interested in signing Hoyer, could be a similar negative against Hoyer's game.

The Browns opted not to draft a quarterback this year and look prepared to enter the season with Brandon Weeden, free-agent signee Jason Campbell, and Thaddeus Lewis. Weeden started fifteen games in 2012, completing 57.4 percent of his passes for 3,385 yards, 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions during his rookie season. He would appear to be the current favorite to start for Cleveland next year, though he could face some competition from the veteran Campbell or perhaps another wild card candidate.

Originally an undrafted free agent signing by the Patriots, Hoyer showed promise in preseason games and worked his way up to being Tom Brady's backup before losing that job to Ryan Mallett last season. Hoyer was 30-of-53 for 330 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions with a QB rating of 65.8 in two games for the Cardinals last year.

Now it could just be a matter of finding another ugly QB situation to try and compete with.
