Lavelle Hawkins released by Titans

After signing Kevin Walter earlier this offseason and drafting Justin Hunter over the weekend, the Titans’ move to cull wide receiver depth chart should not come as a surprise.

Lavelle Hawkins has been released by the Tennessee Titans, according to Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean. The Titans' depth chart was expected to take casualties after the team signed Kevin Walter this offseason and drafted Justin Hunter early in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft.

Hawkins appeared in just seven games last season, and had just five receptions for 62 yards. He entered the year with higher expectations after catching 47 passes for 470 yards and a touchdown in 2011, but ultimately fell by the wayside behind Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright and Nate Washington on the depth chart.

According to the SB Nation blog Music City Miracles, Washington was expected to be the odd man out this offseason. He sports a much heftier contract than the one Hawkins had, and as the team’s No. 3 receiver (and perhaps soon to be lower), the Titans have been rumored to be looking to deal Washington and/or release him.

Washington may still soon be sporting a different uniform. The team likely wants to see what it has in the mercurial-but-talented Hunter before shaking up the depth chart any further. As for Hawkins, he should latch on somewhere. He has the quickness and skillset to be an effective slot receiver.
