Nick Foles has ‘fair shot’ at Eagles quarterback

Michael Vick has the better skill set to run Chip Kelly’s offense, but Nick Foles isn’t giving up on the starting job.

USA TODAY Sports

Michael Vick may have a leg up in the race for the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback job, but that doesn't mean Nick Foles is slacking off. Foles believes the quarterback position is still his for the taking, and he's working hard to take it, per CSN Philadelphia's Geoff Mosher.

Based on respective abilities, it’s no surprise that Vick has the early advantage over Foles. At 32, Vick is still one of the fastest players in the NFL, as he proved when he beat Eagles running back LeSean McCoy in a foot race earlier this month. Foles, on the other hand, fits into the traditional pocket-passer mold. At the 2012 NFL Combine, he ran a 5.03-second 40-yard dash, which isn’t exactly blazing. Vick’s speed and ability to make big plays with his legs make him a better choice for Chip Kelly’s read-option offense.

Still, Foles is no slouch in the passing game. When Vick went down with an injury last season, the rookie stepped up and played fairly well. He completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions in seven games, compiling a 79.1 rating and averaging 242.7 yards per contest. The Eagles were just 1-6 during that stretch, but it was largely because of their porous defense -- Philadelphia gave up 31.3 points per game and allowed 30 or more points in five of the seven games.

Vick is the better raw athlete for Kelly’s attack, but if Foles can prove he’s a better overall player to lead the offense, despite his lack of mobility, he can win the job.
