Patriots release Brandon Deaderick

New England made a few roster moves on Monday, including releasing part-time starter Brandon Deaderick.

The New England Patriots released defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick on Monday, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. The move came as a surprise to many, as Deaderick was a part-time starter for New England.

Deaderick, a 25-year-old former seventh-round pick, played in 34 games including 14 starts in three seasons for the Patriots. Last season, he started five games and played in 14 games, finishing the year with 18 tackles and a sack. Deaderick was still playing under his rookie contract, making him an inexpensive contributor to New England’s defense. The Patriots have some depth along the defensive line, but it was still a surprise to see a player like Deaderick released in May without any known injury or off-the-field factors.

New England released Andre Holmes as well on Monday, as it made room to sign a pair of free-agent offensive linemen. Following rookie minicamp, the Patriots signed rookie free agent R.J. Mattes as well as former San Diego Charger Tyronne Green.
