Titus Young has mental illness, says his father

Titus Young is suffering from a brain disorder which may have been worsened by a concussion, according to his father.

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young has run into trouble with the law recently, including three arrests in the span of a week, and Young's father said a mental illness is part of the issue.

Young was arrested on Friday for burglary, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, the third time he was arrested last week. Young’s father, Richard Young, said Titus suffers from a disorder caused by his brain being compressed into the front of his skull, according to Josh Katzenstein of The Detroit News. Richard Young said his son has medication for the issue but hasn’t been taking it as prescribed. He also said Titus’ disposition changed after he suffered a concussion during his rookie season in 2011.

Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder earlier in his career, said Young needs to get the right treatment. Richard Young said his son has sought treatment but hasn't followed through with the treatment plan.

“He’s not dealing with it the way he should be,” Richard Young said, via the Detroit News. “If the judge gives him a court order, then maybe he’ll get the help he needs.”

Young was released by the Lions in February following several incidents. He was then claimed by the St. Louis Rams, but was again released not long after. He is currently being held on $75,000 bail and could face jail time, according to Orange County Sheriff Department spokesman Jim Amormino.
