Former San Diego Chargers running back Chuck Muncie has died of a heart attack, according to Adam Schefter. He was 60 years old. Muncie was considered one of the best running backs in the league in the late 70s and early 80s.

Former Saints and Chargers RB Chuck Muncie has died of a heart attack Tuesday morning. He was 60.

Muncie was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round in 1976 and played there for four years before being traded to the Chargers in 1980, where he would play for five years. He made three Pro Bowls and led the league in rushing touchdowns with 19 in 1981, tying the then-single-season record. He finished his career with 6,702 rushing yards, 263 receptions, 2,323 receiving yards and 74 total touchdowns.
At Cal, Muncie was a Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1975.
Muncie had an early retirement amid drug problems. Shortly after his NFL career ended, he spent 18 months in jail for cocaine possession. After being released, he cleaned up and dedicated his life to community service, setting up the Chuck Muncie Youth Foundation.
