NFL news roundup: Brian Urlacher, Charles Woodson nearing deals?

NFL free agency isn’t very active, but a pair of notable veterans could be close to new deals. That and more in the daily NFL news roundup.

USA TODAY Sports

Offseason workouts are in full swing around the NFL, but that hasn’t stopped teams for continuing to tweak their rosters. Teams are cycling undrafted rookies through tryouts, but a pair of notable veterans could be soon be joining offseason workouts as well.

We knew Brian Urlacher was unlikely to return to the Chicago Bears, but now we know he may be close to joining one of Chicago's NFC North rivals. Urlacher is reportedly leaning toward signing with the Minnesota Vikings, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times. The 34-year-old linebacker has also drawn interest from the Denver Broncos. Urlacher may not be the player he once was, but even at this stage of his career he should be able to help either the Vikings or Broncos. Playing in Minnesota, however, would ensure at least two meetings with the Bears next season. The Broncos do not face the Bears in 2013.

Urlacher isn't the only veteran who could be close to signing as Charles Woodson has drawn recent interest after a quiet start to free agency. Woodson is scheduled to visit the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, but Denver isn't his only option. Woodson reportedly received an offer from the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, setting up a possible return to the team Woodson began his career with. Woodson played the first eight seasons of his career with Oakland and Levi Damien of Silver and Black Pride wrote the threat of Woodson signing with a division rival may have contributed to Oakland's offer.

While Urlacher and Woodson near deals, running back Felix Jones officially found a new home on Monday. The former Cowboys running back signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. The signing of Jones isn't likely to impact LeSean McCoy's status on the Eagles, but Jones could challenge Bryce Brown for the No. 2 job. Bleeding Green Nation isn't sure if there is much of "high reward" in the deal, but there is very little risk and Jones could have value in the right role.

The rough stretch for former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young continued on Tuesday as he was charged with felony theft for an incident on May 4. The incident, which reportedly occurred at a convenience store, was the Young's fourth incident with police over a nine day stretch. He now faces eight charges stemming from the four incidents.

The Minnesota Vikings' new stadium isn't scheduled to open until 2016, but the team released initial design images on Monday. The design is cutting-edge, including a translucent roof which will provide natural light and collect solar energy. Ted Glover of the Daily Norseman is a fan of the new design.

This is about as cutting edge as one could imagine, but I really, really like it. The innovation with the largest pivoting glass doors in the world, to the largest clear ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) roof in the world and the first on a stadium in the nation, to the bowl that is level with the street as you walk in, to the modern lines and glass ceiling just combines well and works.

The NFL lost a former star on Monday as former San Diego Chargers running back Chuck Muncie died of a heart attack. Muncie played nine seasons in the NFL, making three Pro Bowls while rushing for 6,702 yards. He was 60 years old.
