Chris Kluwe signs with Raiders

Kluwe will be playing for a team other than the Vikings for the first time in his NFL career.

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

The Oakland Raiders agreed to terms on a one-year contract with punter Chris Kluwe for the league minimum on Wednesday, according to Fox Sports' Brendon Ayanbadejo, and an official announcement of the deal is expected Thursday. Kluwe, who is entering his ninth year in the NFL, spent his first eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings released Kluwe on May 6.

Kluwe averaged 45 yards per punt last season, a shade above his 44.4-yard career average, which stands as a Vikings franchise record. His best season came in 2008 when he averaged 47.6 yards per punt.

He'll be replacing Shane Lechler, who signed a three-year deal with the Houston Texans earlier in the offseason. Lechler has earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl during his career and he has led the NFL in yards per punt on five occasions. Kluwe has finished among the top ten in yards per punt three times, most recently in 2008.
