Anthony Hargrove signs with Cowboys, according to report

Dallas hopes that the veteran defensive lineman will be able to improve its defense, despite him missing all of 2012. Can he now recover from the bounty scandal?

Ronald Martinez

Many people have speculated that the career of defensive end Anthony Hargrove was over following his eight-game suspension for participating in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. After signing with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday however, he's clearly got some time left in the NFL.

Hargrove spent just two seasons in New Orleans, but perhaps played his best football in 2009 when the Saints won the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. After playing in all 16 games as a defensive tackle that year and scoring a touchdown on a fumble recovery, Hargrove returned for another season in 2010 but had less success and was let go following the 2010 season. Hargrove signed with the Seattle Seahawks, playing in 15 games as a reserve. He moved on to Green Bay in the following offseason, but was released by the Packers in the 2012 preseason.

It was announced during the summer that Hargrove, along with teammates Jonathan Vilma, Scott Fujita, and Will Smith, would be facing suspensions in taking part of a bounty program that reward players for hurting opposing players. Hargrove's eight-game suspension was overturned by an internal appeals panel, but the league later re-issued the suspensions to all of the players and personnel anyway.

The Cowboys are looking to upgrade a defense that finished 19th in yards allowed, 24th in points allowed and 22nd against the run in 2012 en route to an 8-8 record. Dallas defensive lineman Josh Brent is possibly facing his own suspension for a DUI and could provide an opening for Hargrove to try and make the final 53-man roster.
