Chargers sign Dwight Freeney to 2-year contract

The Chargers added some veteran depth after losing Melvin Ingram, inking Dwight Freeney to a two-year deal.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers signed defensive end Dwight Feeney to a two-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Financial terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

Freeney spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Indianapolis Colts, racking up 107.5 sacks while making the Pro Bowl seven times. He finished last season with 12 tackles and five sacks and wasn't a particularly good fit in Chuck Pagano's 3-4 defense, leading the Colts to move on from the 33-year-old.

The Chargers had a dire need for a pass rusher after losing Melvin Ingram for the season due to a torn ACL. Freeney should immediately step in and become a starter at OLB opposite Jarret Johnson. The team's other options are Larry English and rookie Tourek Williams.
