Jets considering veteran QB after David Garrard retirement

The Jets may be looking for another veteran quarterback after David Garrard retired. It’s a pretty bare market.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Now that quarterback David Garrard has retired, the New York Jets are down to Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Greg McElroy, and Matt Simms. General manager John Idzik may be looking for another veteran to take Garrard's spot, according to ESPN New York's Rich Cimini, but the free agent market is thin.

The biggest names available include Charlie Batch, Tyler Thigpen, Trent Edwards, and Byron Leftwich. Batch has been a reliable backup to Ben Roethlisberger and played under offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg in 2001, but he's also 38 years old. Thigpen is familiar with quarterbacks coach David Lee while Edwards knows Mornhinweg's system after the two spent last season with the Eagles. Leftwich has started for three different teams in the past six seasons.

It’s not a pretty market, but if the Jets want to add a veteran, these are probably their best options. It’s looking more likely that Smith will emerge as the Week 1 starter in New York.
