NFL execs say Geno Smith is ‘tuned out,’ question his leadership, per report

According to one report, a couple of league executives have questioned Geno Smith’s leadership and willingness to learn in the NFL.

There's been a lot of talk lately about New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith and why he fired his agent after falling into the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. There was some more talk about Smith and whether or not he could mature into a franchise quarterback on Wednesday.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports wrote that some executives around the NFL have questioned Smith’s leadership and his attitude regarding his ability to grow in the NFL.

According to Cole, one executive said that Smith “doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.” The concern is that Smith isn’t entering the NFL with an open mind for learning the position. The executive went on to say, “I’m not sure he knows how to take instruction, because he pretty much wouldn’t listen or talk to our coaches.”

A second-round pick in last week's draft, Smith has a long way to go in the NFL. He's said all along that he thinks he's the best quarterback in this class, and it was once widely assumed that he would be a top 10 selection. Instead, he was the second quarterback off the board after E.J. Manuel, who was the only quarterback selected in the first round.

“I think he wants to be good. But you can’t tell him anything right now,” the same executive reportedly said. “He’s tuned out because he thinks he’s got it all down.”

A different league executive told Cole that Smith “doesn’t have much presence,” and is “not much of a leader.”

Smith is expected to compete with Mark Sanchez and David Garrard for the starting job. The Jets signed the veteran Garrard prior to the draft with the intention of mentoring whatever rookie quarterback the team eventually drafted.
