Eagles reportedly passed on Nick Foles trade talk during NFL Draft

Despite drafting Matt Barkley in 2013, Philadelphia was not in a hurry to move their rookie quarterback from last season, Nick Foles. How will the Eagles move forward with their quarterbacks?

US PRESSWIRE

Many fans have expected that the Philadelphia Eagles would be looking to move on from Nick Foles following the hiring of Chip Kelly as head coach. That seemed even more likely after the Eagles retained Michael Vick as the starter and then selected Matt Barkley in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Despite those moves, however, Philadelphia and Kelly also apparently solidified Foles' status on the roster after turning down trade talks for the second-year QB during the draft, according to Philly Mag's Tim McManus.

Taken in the third round of the 2012 draft under the Andy Reid regime, Foles flashed some impressive, albeit inconsistent, skills during his rookie season. He started six games and completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions before breaking his hand against the Redskins late in the year. Reid was fired after a disappointing finish and the team hired Kelly, known for his unique offensive schemes at the University of Oregon that would require a certain set of skills at quarterback that Foles would not appear to possess.

However, Kelly is not expected to run exactly the same option scheme he had at Oregon, and he has publicly stated that he likes Foles. Thursday’s report that the Eagles wanted to keep him rather than trade him for a draft pick would appear to back that up.

While the quarterback situation seems a bit crowded with three interesting signal callers, it does not look like it’s going to get any roomier. Philly’s quarterback depth chart could be one of the more intriguing stories of the offseason.
