Mario Williams says he didn’t abuse painkillers

Mario Williams denied abusing painkillers or having suicidal thoughts while saying the controversy surrounding text messages sent to his ex-fiancee has been taken out of context and blown out of proportion.

After a series of personal text messages were made public on Friday, Mario Williams addressed the media on Monday and denied taking medication without the team's knowledge or having suicidal thoughts.

The lawyers for Williams' ex-fiancee Erin Marzouki revealed a number of alleged text messages Williams sent Marzouki. In one, Williams claimed to have taken medication without the Bills knowing while also having suicidal thoughts.

“I took 3 hydrocodones this morning and no one knows,” Williams allegedly said, via NFL.com. “I’m going to take 2 more on the plane and fade away ... No money in the world should leave me with suicidal thoughts.”

On Monday Williams said the pain killers he took were prescribed and dispensed by the team. He also denied having suicidal thoughts and instead said the alleged messages were a result of the situation he was in and him venting to a person he thought he could trust.

“In a moment of anger I’ll talk about anything,” he said, via WGR 550. “Me texting somebody something that’s personal, somebody that who’s a situation that it was then, I think that’s just a way of venting out. But obviously that’s the wrong person to vent to.”

Williams said the medication he took was a result of wrist surgery he had during the season. He said anything he takes comes directly from the team and noted that he had never failed a drug test. As for the controversy surrounding the lawsuit, Williams said he knew the situation would get bad but claimed it was the “last of my worries.”

Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he had spoken to Williams, but would not comment on the situation.

“The organization will not comment on personal issues,” Marrone said. “My conversations with him are private”
