Reshad Jones skipping Dolphins OTAs due to contract disbute, per report

Reshad Jones wants a new contract and he reportedly will skip OTAs unless negotiations begin.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Miami Dolphins begin their first session of OTAs on Tuesday, but they may have to do so without Reshad Jones. The safety is not planning to report for workouts unless the team begins negotiations for a new contract, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

The 25-year-old Jones started 16 games last season and produced career-highs in nearly every major category. He finished the season with 94 total tackles, nine pass deflections and four interceptions. Jones is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but would apparently prefer an extension over hitting the free agent market. The former fifth-round pick is scheduled to make $1.323 million next season, according to Spotrac.

The Dolphins were one of the most active teams in free agency this offseason, signing Mike Wallace, Dannell Ellerbe, Philip Wheeler and others to long-term deals. The Dolphins and Jones' agent have reportedly had some contract discussions this offseason, but according to Salguero, Jones is reportedly not satisfied with the progress.

Jones will not be fined for missing OTAs as offseason workouts are voluntary. He started 30 games during his first three seasons.
