Seattle’s Cliff Avril misses OTAs due to foot injury

The Seahawks’ depth at defensive end is already in question, and now free agent acquisition Cliff Avril is out with a foot injury.

USA TODAY Sports

Cliff Avril was arguably Seattle's biggest free agent acquisition, but the defensive end will have to wait to make his Seahawks debut on the practice field as he's currently sitting out OTAs due to a foot injury.

Avril missed the first day of OTAs due to plantar fascia, an injury which occurred four weeks ago, according to Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune. Avril's injury is another hit to an already thin group at the LEO defensive end position. Seattle's starting LEO, Chris Clemons, is still recovering from a torn ACL and could miss a significant portion of the season. Bruce Irvin backed up Clemons last season, but he will miss the first four games of 2013 after being suspended for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said the injury will need time to heal and expects Avril to be out at least “another couple weeks” at a minimum.

“The plantar fascia thing is a real uncomfortable thing,” Carroll said after Monday’s practice. “It’s something that you can come back from. It’s not a problem. But you just have to wait it out. He’s real anxious to go, and he’s doing very well in his rehab.”

Plantar fascia injuries are nothing new for the Seahawks, as defensive end Red Bryant and tight end Zach Miller dealt with torn plantar fascia late last season.
